What is the Orb?

TLDR:

  • It's social, but it's not social media.
  • Your orb is a container for everything that you put into UpBeing.
  • Your orb is a tool to create emotional visibility with the people in your life.

“It’s so cool”

“It’s really nice to look at”

“It’s pretty”

“But why is there no score for my wellbeing?”

What is the orb that lives at the centre of the UpBeing app?

Meet Your Orb.

Numbers are objective and measurable but feelings are subjective and personal. That’s why UpBeing instead represents moods as unique shapes and colours called figments. That’s why, instead of a wellbeing score at the centre of the app, you’ll find the orb.

Your orb is a container for everything that you put into UpBeing.

Each time you complete a check-in, a figment is generated that adds colour and shape to your orb. These figments are shaped by how productive you’ve been, coloured by how motivated you are, and scaled by how productive you’ve been. Meanwhile, your orb is dynamic, ever-evolving, and starts fresh each day - just like you.

You'll see more red in your orb if you're feeling anxious, uneasy or angry. Similarly, you'll see more green if you're feeling excited, cheerful or proud.

It's social, but not social media.

Modern-day social media is synonymous with feeds and profile pages.

UpBeing is social, but it’s not social media and the orb isn’t a profile page.

  1. The orb is self-contained. The orb is designed to show you the aggregation of all your data and all your feelings in a contained, and quick-to-understand way. There’s no forever-refresh.
  2. The orb is about how you're feeling, not what you're doing. The orb is designed to communicate those things that may be invisible on the surface, not reinforce what's happening on the surface.
  3. You choose who sees your orb and whose orb you see. Studies show time and time again that social media isn’t good for us. The orbit allows you to choose the people and things that matter to you, and only see those things. It’s about connection in a 1-to-1 and 1-to-several fashion; it’s not about interconnection.

At a quick glance, just by using colour, your orb helps you identify patterns and trends in your wellbeing, and share how you're feeling with others.

A tool for visibility.

Think of social wellbeing as the sum of all your relationships both near and far.

It’s one of the single most important predictors of health and longevity. It’s a product of the connection you have with your partner, your friends, and your family, but it’s also a product of a broader sense of belonging to community, to workplace, and to culture.

The orb is designed to capture the way you’re feeling, in aggregate, in a common-sense visual language within the UpBeing app. That way, your orb can go with you wherever you go. That way, your orb can be a tool for your social wellbeing - whatever it looks like.

All without leaving the UpBeing app: you can bring your orb into orbit where your family, friends, and loved ones can use it to gain insights into how you’re feeling, you can bring your orb with you into your communities to bring tangibility to belonging and community connection, and you can even bring your orb to your coach, therapist, or clinician.

Your orb goes with you through your wellbeing journey.

With gratitude,

UpBeing
